Most states have health club-specific consumer protection laws designed to safeguard consumers from financial and other losses, some of which result from clubs going out of business.

  IHRSA's Position Outlook
IHRSA supports consumer protection legislation that safeguards the public against fraud, deceit and financial hardship while fostering and encouraging competition, fair dealing and prosperity in the fitness club industry. Consumer protection laws should apply to all facilities providing health club services, including tax-exempt facilities such as the YMCA and JCC.

Due in part to IHRSA clubs' participation in the lawmaking process, recently enacted consumer protection legislation has generally been more equitable and more appropriate.
