The Olympic athlete, the competitive sportsman, and even the weekend warrior, for that matter, are all confronted with enormous metabolic free radical stress. In this exercising population, free radical excess overwhelms the natural antioxidant defenses in the body. Chronic antioxidant insufficiency is the result causing undesirable consequences. This lecture will discuss the complex elaborate nature of intracellular energy production (ATP) emphasizing targeted nutritional supplements that help to preserve cellular membranes, sequester free radical activity, as well as prevent the accumulation of toxic metabolites that will often impair athletic performance. Creative ways to support endogenous ATP production will also be discussed.
